In the case of the day of the dead, a lot of the art we see is actually the work of those who died centuries ago, or who lived long before they were born. The day of the dead is a time of universal remembrance, and art can reflect that.
What it all comes down to is that the dead don’t need to be alive to be remembered, they just need to be dead. There is a universal, timeless, and eternal meaning to mortality. The day of the dead is a nice way to memorialize the fact that we are in the age of technology and that we are not the center of existence anymore.
The day of the dead has become the focus of many artworks, most notably those of Van Gogh and Salvador Dali. It’s a time when artists are encouraged to think about and express the timeless qualities of mortality, as opposed to the “now” of technology and materialism.
Artists everywhere are playing with the idea of the day of the dead, with the ultimate goal of making it a time to reflect on the meaning of mortality. Whether or not that actually is a good thing is debatable. In the words of the late, great Mark Rothko, “No artist should make art for the sake of art; art should be something that is necessary to the artist.
Artists everywhere do make art for the sake of art. The creative impulse is in our own hands. We can explore our own ideas and make them our own. The point isn’t to make art that is beautiful, or that is perfect, but to draw our own ideas, make them our own, and have them express the timeless qualities of mortality.
I think No artist should make art for the sake of art. That is such a shame. I loved how Rothko saw his art as a statement on the human condition. I like to think artists should take their art as a statement, not something to be judged.
I want to see the art of art in my life. Art is something that is in the heart of something that is timeless. It’s something that cannot be judged, and it’s something that is truly beautiful. I just wish artists would stop being afraid to be different and start being open to their own ideas.
Artists are often afraid to be different. They fear they will lose what makes them unique. They fear they will be told what they should or should not be doing. They fear they will be judged or their work will be dismissed. They fear the possibility of being pigeonholed. The world would be a very different place if we all had such fear.
This is so true. I remember spending a lot of time in college thinking that if I were to go to art school I would never make a living doing anything remotely artistic. I was wrong. So many artists out there make a living doing what they love. If I were to become a visual artist I’d be ecstatic. I would be able to express my creativity and I would be able to make art that I love.
I remember being fascinated by the idea of making art that I love. I loved the idea of being able to have my own art that I could make that I loved. I loved being able to use the skills I had as a writer to create art that I loved. If I were to become a visual artist, I would be ecstatic because I would be able to express myself through my art that I love.
