I like to use these descriptive nouns to describe people, places, or objects in my descriptions of game objects and other products. I do this because it’s a good way to show you how a specific thing works, without saying much about what it is. Most of the time, I don’t even have a picture of the item. I just give you a description and you can make up your own mind.
For example, I could say “The new game console I picked up is a Sega Genesis. Its a console that allows you to play video games. Its a console that allows you to play video games. Its a console that allows you to play video games.” This is descriptive. I dont have to say much more about what it is.
While this is a fairly common situation, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you have to describe the game itself, you dont need an adjective. The best way to describe a game is to say it is one of the best games of all time. Or a game you have to have in your collection.
If you are trying to get your point across, you are likely not going to be using descriptive words. You are more likely to use verbs, adjectives, or other words that describe what the game is.
It is true that descriptive words can be used to describe a game in a way that does not make you sound condescending (“This is awesome”) or like you don’t really understand what you are saying (“This game is really hard, I don’t know how to play it”). However, there are exceptions to the rule.
While descriptive words are a great way to say “this game is really hard”, they are also a lazy way of saying “I don’t understand what you are saying”. The lazy way of saying “I don’t understand what you are saying” is to say “I don’t understand this game”, which is the way I see it being used all the time.
Yes, we know you are saying you dont understand what we are saying, but that is a lazy way of saying my opinion. So, in an effort to avoid the word lazy, we are using descriptive words instead. We know that descriptive words are lazy and they make us sound like I dont know what you are saying, but we also think it is super useful.
Describing the game in a sentence like “I dont understand how it works” is lazy, but describing it in a sentence like “I dont understand what it is saying” is descriptive. It shows what we are trying to say.
