By I used to have a rabbit feeding hutch that I used during the summer to keep the rabbits cool during the heat, but now we have a feeder that looks like a rabbit’s nose. I put the hay in the box and feed the rabbits on the top of the box.
And then I feed them on the side.
I’ve found that rabbits are a great choice for this project. In fact, the “hay” box is actually a combination of the two boxes. If I want to feed them hay on the top, then I fill the box with hay, but leave the bottom box empty. If I want them to eat on the side, I fill the box with feed on the top and empty feed on the side.
When I was a kid I had a box that was full of a bunch of cats. One day I came home and fed the cats on the top of the box, and the next day I fed the cats on the bottom of the box. It was the perfect balance.

Hay is a good source of protein and is low in calories. For your rabbits, it’s better than eating cardboard, so they’ll eat more. You can even feed them from the top of the box, since it’s less of a hassle.

Hay is a common ingredient in feeders. However, the rabbits will not eat the hay unless you can see that they’ve actually eaten all of the hay. This is done by putting a lighted candle in a bowl of hay, and then you wait for the rabbit to come close enough to that candle to see that it’s been eaten. If you want to feed your rabbits hay, you can just have a box of hay, or you can use a box of hay in the garden.
