In my favorite book, The Three Levels of Self-Awareness, there are three levels of self-awareness. The first level is the level of self-consciousness, the second is the level of self-willedness, and the third is the level of self-doubt. To achieve this level of self-awareness, we must block out our thoughts, sensations, and emotions. Then, we can see what we are thinking, feeling, and doing.
If you’re someone who is self-aware, then you obviously know exactly what you’re thinking, feeling, and doing in the moment. You can also make a lot of mistakes, which is also a way to self-aware. This ability to self-know allows us to be more aware of our actions and what happens when we do them. But there are two problems with self-awareness, and this is one of them.
One, it is way too easy to over-analyze everything. Even something as simple as seeing a red button in the distance in a field of green can lead to a flood of thoughts. For example, if you are in a field of green, and you think, “I should turn this green button into red,” then you will find yourself thinking the same thoughts over and over again. Because of this, it is much easier to over-analyze things instead of recognizing it.
But the other problem, is that we don’t realize we are over-analyzing things. We are just over-thinking. So while we might be looking at a red button in the distance, we are actually over-thinking the idea of a red button being in the distance. We are making the same mistake over and over again.
The solution to this problem is to actually stop overthinking. Stop looking at things and start looking at them in a different way. Make everything about you. That is the way the mind works, and it will lead to a better way of thinking.
That’s right. We are overthinking all the time. In many ways, we are. It’s only because we are so busy trying to figure out what to do and how to do it that we forget that we’re always doing it. And that’s a problem.
We are like a little kid with a new toy. We buy it, we play with it, and we break it. Its a little kid that loses his toys and its a big problem. Over time he loses his ability to learn and become more mature. Eventually we lose our ability to think, and the result is that we don’t get any further.
How do we stop this from happening? We think too much. We try to keep our options open. Over time we give up on trying to figure out what to do and just go with the flow.
In one of the first lessons in our self awareness course, we learn the difference between a baby and an adult. The baby is a person with little to no self awareness. So we give him a toy and tell him to play with it. The problem is when he starts thinking about it, he loses interest. We want to be able to do a little thinking, but we cant. Eventually we give up. Eventually we find ourselves with a life of doing nothing.
If you want people to be able to focus on what they are doing, they need to be able to imagine the future. If they can’t, they don’t have it. To put it mildly, most people are not good at thinking about the future. But if a person can focus on the future, they can control it.
