The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
The problem however is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we are on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us.
In this context, we’re talking about when a person is not aware of the autopilot they are on. We often talk about being on autopilot when we forget to take a nap or when we don’t take our meds as prescribed. We hear stories of people who are on autopilot, forget they are on autopilot, and then they die.
There is such a thing as being on autopilot for so long that you get lost in the day to day routine you know, because when you are not even aware of your own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then you no longer control them.
When we are not aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. We are in a state of “self-awareness,” which means that we are able to exercise some degree of meta-cognition. As a result, we can say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas. That might not be a coincidence,” which is also pretty accurate.
While we are aware of our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, we have no control over them. We only control self-awareness. And a person with self-awareness is able to exercise some degree of meta-cognition. As a result, he can say, Hmm every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas. The whole point of the game is to take out the Visionaries, which means we can’t just sit back and wait for them to die. So if we want to be able to take out these Visionaries, we have to get better at our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. The game is also about learning to make the most out of the situations we’re in—this game is about making the most out of what we’re given.
The game is made by a team of people who are all very talented, so the story is pretty well written. I haven’t played Deathloop yet, and I’m sure I’ll be checking it out soon, but this trailer makes me very excited to give it a shot.
Deathloop is one of those games that could be really compelling if the developers gave us more control over the story. Instead, they just tell us what the game is about, and we have no clue what its purpose is. But it does have a great hook – the game is only about fighting Visionaries, but we can only assume they’re the ones who created Deathloop.
The story itself has one very annoying but very important thing in it. We never learn who is controlling the island. We don’t know they’re here. We can only assume that there is one of them and he’s the one who controls the island, but we don’t know who. That means the story isn’t really about the island, it’s about the Visionaries. Even if the island itself is real, the Visionaries are the one controlling events on it.
